Biography for Charles H. Ashford compiled from census records and Lockport City Directories:
Charles H. Ashford was born about 1851 to parents William N. Ashford and Martha (Hare) Ashford in Canada. By 1860 the family is living in Lewiston, Niagara County, New York. In 1868, Charles is managing the American Hotel, located on the corner of Main and Locust, in Lockport, NY. About this time he marries Anna Morris. (No record of the marriage found so far). Their first child, Ida May Ashford, is born about 1870. A second child, Nellie Ashford, is born about 1873. About 1876, Charles becomes the proprietor of Sweeney House, located at 294 Market in Lockport. By 1878 their 3rd child, William N. Ashford. is born. The 4th child, May M. Ashford was born about 1879. Charles remained the proprietor of the Sweeney House until some time between 1917 and 1919. In 1919 he is shown to be living in the Sweeney House, but no longer proprietor. He lived here until his death on July 14, 1922.
