Benny Gene Asher, 63, of Waco, passed away Monday, Jan 11, 2010. Graveside services will be 3 pm Monday, Jan 18th at Union Cemetery, family friend Rev Johnson officiating.
Gene was born on July 30, 1946 in Waco, Texas. As a boy he loved the old southwest, and had the passion to learn how things worked. He would pretend to be a cowboy or an Indian, traveling to new places searching for new adventures. Or, he was a scientist taking things apart and putting them back together.
During his early teenage years it became obvious that he was a natural born mechanic like his father. He loved modifying his '57 Chevy to make it go faster and faster.
In 1964, Gene joined the Navy. He sailed from California, to Hawaii, and to other exotic ports such as Japan and the Philippines. He served during the Vietnam War as a signalman aboard the USS Coral Sea. His heroism earned him the Bronze Star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.
Throughout Gene's life, he continued his love to travel to the southwest and his desire to work on all things mechanical and electrical. He worked for the government as an engineer and retired with numerous awards and honors.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents William & Nettie Asher and Floyd & Ethel Wooley, his father Bennie Asher, his Uncles Leo & Rev Buddy Asher and Walter Scheffler, his Great Aunts Jessie Asher Toliver and Martha Shook Asher, and Great Uncles Luther and Claude Asher.
Gene is survived by his son, mother, three sisters, several nephews and nieces, and his Aunts Ann and Joye. Forever in our hearts, your loving family will miss you each and everyday.
