Birth: Aug. 12, 1876
Lincoln County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Dec. 18, 1933
Wayne County
North Carolina, USA

James came to the asylum from Lincoln County where he was a farmer and was married. He was hospitalized here 23 yr 8 mo 24 days and died from exhaustion from mania.

It appears he is the son of Mason Ashe and Mary Ann Brooks. Their family has been widely researched as both the Brookses and the Ashes lived as free blacks long before general emancipation. Asa James appears to have been named after his Cherokee great grandfather, Asa, who married Eliza Ashe, she having taken the name of her slave master, John Ashe, son of a former NC Governor. Asa James is a brother to William, Eliza Ann Ashe McLain, Emma Ashe Gibbs, (Joiner) Regina, Pinkney Avira, Callie Ashe Brooks Young, Frances and Arthur M Ashe.

James' uncle, Elijah Ashe, served in the US 4th Colored Infantry, Company F during the Civil War and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

James married Cora unknown and they are the parents of Sarah W Ashe, born in 1898. The 1900 census shows these three living with Cora's grandmother, Caroline Cansler. His WWI draft card in Sep 1918 indicates that James was of medium height and build and was an inmate of the hospital. His contact was Mary Ashe (likely his mother).

James' nephew, Howard McLean (McLain), son of James' sister, Eliza Ann Ashe McLean, is also buried here, having died in care here in 1918. Howard's brother, Elmore, also died here but is buried elsewhere.

James' brother, Pinckney, is the paternal grandfather of Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr, world-renown tennis champion.
