Clyde Howard Ashe, 84, of Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of Strayhorn, died Tuesday, December 21, 2004. Mr. Ashe was veteran of World War II, serving in the Air Corps in the Pacific Theater where he completed his duty in 1945. He then came back to Bakersfield, collected his wife and family, and returned to Mississippi. Mr. Ashe tried cotton farming, but the boll weevil won out and he was hired by United Air Lines, where he worked for 30 years. During his employment there, the company sent him to San Francisco and then to Los Angeles. He later retired to Bakersfield. He also enjoyed his vegetable garden and working in his garage. Services were Wednesday, December 29 at Valley Baptist Church in Bakersfield with interment in Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery. Pastor Phil Neighbors officiated.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Veda Bell; and his parents, Clyde and Katie Ashe of Strayhorn, Mississippi. He is survived by his daughters, Mary VaJean Taylor and her husband Lewis of Racine, Wis., and Karen Rodger and her husband, Brett, of Bakersfield; his brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Lou Ashe of Tunica; one sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Carl Laughlin of Calhoun City, Miss.; two sisters-in-law, Brylie Ashe of Sarah and Opal Fulce of Bakersfield; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
