The Oklahoman May 1, 2012:

June 29, 1927 - April 28, 2012 CHOCTAW

Mary Ashby Anderson left this life on April 28, 2012. She was born June 29, 1927, in Octavia, OK to Ben F. and Elizabeth Davenport Ashby. She was the granddaughter of H.S.P. (Stump) and Amanda E. Wray Ashby and George and Elizabeth Yakambe Davenport; sister of Amanda "Bess" Ashby Bracken and brothers, Neal F. Ashby and Harrison H. Ashby. They are all deceased.

Mrs. Anderson married Thomas C. Anderson 4/16/52. They spent 55+ years together. It was a sad time for her when he passed on in 2008. She is survived by her sister-in-law, nieces and nephews, as well as other family members and friends.

She was a graduate of Southeastern Oklahoma State University with BS and MT degrees. While attending Southeastern, she lived at Oklahoma Presbyterian College, a place she loved and credited with having a tremendous influence for good in her life. The career she chose to devote her life to was education. She served for 21 years as a teacher, principal, and coach in the following schools: Octavia, Hatfield (Arkansas), Nashoba, Russett, Mulhall, Wanette, and Putnam City.

In addition, she worked for the Oklahoma State Department of Education for 18 years as Coordinator of Business Education as well as assisting in other areas of the department when needed. As a teacher, she worked tirelessly to meet the needs of her students. As a coordinator, she provided leadership, dedication, and service to the business educators with the ultimate goal of benefiting the students. A note written to her by one of the teachers when she retired described her well, "May all the good you have done be returned to you a hundred fold — and more. Never — never — in my years of knowing you have I ever seen you give less than your very best."

Services are Thursday at the South Colonial Chapel, with burial following at Octavia Cemetery in Octavia, OK.
