A terrible accident happened at the new Third ward school building this afternoon shortly before two o'clock, by which Edward Aschinger was instantly killed. The unfortunate man was hired by Henry Schneider who, has the contract to do the masonry work on the building, to tend the masons, and he was engaged in wheeling a wheel barrow load of mortar to a certain portion of the building at the time when the accident happened. As nearly as can be learned he was near a hole cut in the second floor for a staircase, where at present a ladder is used as the means of ascent and descent. The load being very heavy he was a trifle unsteady on his feet and while trying to balance himself he fell over backwards down through the hole in the floor, a distance of about twenty feet. The wheelbarrow and mortar followed after, and when his fellow workmen reached the unfortunate man he was covered with mortar and the wheelbarrow was on top of him. When first reached his pulse was found to be beating slightly, but in a few seconds it ceased and life was extinct. Dr. Linde was at once summoned and upon making an examination he found the man's neck broken and one arm fractured, so that the probabilities are that death occurred almost instantly.
Soon after the accident occurred Justice Ryckman held an inquest, and a verdict was rendered that the deceased came to his death through an accident, there being no blame placed upon anyone.
Edward Aschinger resided at 51 Hazel street, between Washington and Merritt streets. He was a man about 45 years of age, and leaves a wife and one child. He was well known by many people in the city and is spoken of as having been an industrious and a frugal man. His body was removed after the inquest had been held, to the family residence on Hazel street.
