He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. On Dec. 18, 1965, Richard married Esther Ortega in Richmond, Texas.
He was employed for several years as superintendent at Jacintoport Wastewater Plant in Channelview, Texas. After his retirement around 1988, he and his family moved to Carroll County. He was a self-taught handyman with skills in carpentry, plumbing, mechanics, welding, gardening and farming. In his spare time he enjoyed playing bluegrass and gospel music on his guitar. He was deeply devoted to all of his family and will be rembered as a quiet, gentle and kind person.
He is survived by his wife Esther, of the home; two sons, Daniel Ramirez Asbury and his wife Lisa of Branson, Mo., and James Richard Asbury of Berryville; two daughters, Cynthia Asbury Romo and husband Mosses of Wallis, Texas, and Siria Asbury Gill and husband Jeff of Fordyce; four sisters, Iva Lee Simpson and husband Tillman of Green Forest, Wanda Irvin of Hillsborough, Ill., Shirley Shinnebarger and husband Charles of Walnut Shade, Mo., and Ethel Gardner of Green Forest; three brothers, William L. Asbury of Berryville, Kenneth Asbury and wife Bonnie of Green Forest, and Leo Baldwin of Jacksonville, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, one brother, one sister, and one son.
Celebration of life services were held Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at Smith Family Funeral Home Chapel in Green Forest. Pastors Jerry Spurlock and Kennth Asbury officiated. Interment was in Farewell Cemetery.
