ARZOLA--Berta Santana Arzola, 87, passed away with her family by her side on March 21, in Jacksonville, Florida.
Born in Trinidad, Cuba, on May 1, 1923, to Luis Santana and Grace Mendell, Mrs. Arzola was a graduate of La Escuela Normal para Maestros in Havana, Cuba, and received her Master's degree in Education from Indiana State University. Fleeing the political oppression of Cuba, she moved to the United States with her family in 1962. She was a beloved Spanish teacher at Dublin Junior High School in Dublin, Georgia, for more than 10 years, and moved to Jacksonville in 1974.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Arzola and their son, Rafael (5).
She is survived by her daughter, Bertha Cunningham of Jacksonville, and her husband, Robert Cunningham; her two granddaughters Christina Taylor and Katie Ryan of Jacksonville, and Katie's husband John Ryan; her four great-grand children, Christopher Taylor, Mikaela Taylor, Alexander Leggett and Thomas Ryan; three siblings, Mirta Santana of Trinidad, Cuba. Henry Santana of Miami, Florida, and Asuncion Santana of Jacksonville; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was a devout and cherished member of La Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana in Jacksonville, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She loved jigsaw puzzles, church music, her family and yellow flowers.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, Florida. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 24, at 2 p.m., also at Jacksonville Memory Gardens.
