Funeral services for A.J. "Jesse" Arvin, 79, were held Friday, September 24 at 2 p.m. at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery with Masonic rites. Rev. H.L. Hinch, Dr. J. Chester Badgett, and Rev. V.A. Jones were in charge of the services. Mr. Arvin, a retired farmer and rural mail carrier, was one of Campbellsville's best known citizens and prior to his retirement in 1940, had for years been actively interested in and a part of the business life of the community. Ambrose Jesse Arvin, son of the late Jesse Tubbs Arvin & Sarah Freeman Arvin, was born in Madison Co., KY, on April 29, 1875. He died at his home on West Second Street Wednesday, September 22, [1954] at 8:45 a.m. after several months' illness. He professed faith in Christ at an early age some 40 years ago and was a member of the Campbellsville Cumberland Presbyterian Church of which he served for many years as elder until time of his death. He united in marriage to Miss Edna Earl Netherland on February 19, 1896 and to this union, 2 sons and 4 daughters were born. They are George Arvin, Mrs. C.R. Cook, and Mrs. R.M. Crooker, all of Campbellsville; Mrs. William Kelley and William Jessie Arvin, Louisville; Mrs. W.B. Gwinn of Crystal City, MO. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by 3 sisters, Mrs. H.V. Shively, Mrs. E.L. Smith, and Mrs. Sam Harding, all of Campbellsville, also 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. During his lifetime, Mr. Arvin had a varied and colorful business career. In his early business life he was interested in and associated with the livery stable business, also restaurant, hotel, bottling company and timber business. He served Taylor County as Sheriff for 4 years and also 1 term as Coroner. He served 30 years as rural mail carrier, retiring in 1940. He was a member for 50 years of Pitman Lodge #124 F&AM, and also a member of Taylor Chapter #90 Royal Arch Masons. He served as past master and past high priest of the local Masonic organizations. He attended the Grand Lodge of Kentucky for 37 consecutive years. Honorary pallbearers were local Masons. Singers were Herman Hubbard, L.T. Wheat, Roy Walker and Roy Wethington.
