Friends through out the Valley were shocked and grieved to hear of the tragic death of Mrs. Nellie Stuart Artz, wife of Charles E. Artz, who shot herself in the head at her home two miles east of Woodstock Wednesday morning, dying instantly. Mrs. Artz had suffered from attacks of grip three times, each time the disease seemed more severe than the two previous one and since last March had been suffering from a mental aberration caused by prolonged illness, that she came to her death, while wholly irresponsible. Her daughter and sister had left the room only a few moments before, when they heard the fatal shot.
Mrs. Artz, who was before marriage, Miss Nellie Stuart Dellinger, was born at the Dellinger home on the Shenandoah River on October 26, 1875, and had she lived until this Sunday, would have been 49 years of age.
Mrs. Artz was loved and held in the highest esteem by a large circle of friends. She was ever ready to be of service to friends and neighbors at all times, especially in times of trouble. She was a devoted wife and mother and for a number of years had been a member of St. Paul's Reformed Church.
Surviving beside her husband are two children, Miss Pauline Artz and Roy Artz, two sisters, Mrs. Ashby McInturff of Washington, and Miss Lucy Dellinger, who made her home with Mrs. Artz; four brothers, Charles A. Dellinger, of Woodstock, Calvin and Nevin Dellinger of Washington, and Frank Dellinger of Lander, Wyoming. Services were conducted by the Rev. J. D. Hatmaker.
