ARTIS, Albert James March 5, 1862 – August 28, 1933
The death of Albert James Artis occurred at the Luther Hospital, Eau Claire, on Monday, Aug. 28, 1933 At the time of his passing he had reached the age of 71 years, five months and 23 days.
The deceased was born near Madoc, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, March 5, 1862. At the age of three and one-half years he came with his parents to Green Lake County, Wisconsin, where they lived for a year, then moving to Eau Claire County where he spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Artis was married to Lillie L. Sawyer on June 28, 1835. She and an infant son passed away the following year. In 1888 he was married to Mrs. Alice T. Page, who preceded him in death two years ago. Two children were born to this union, Eva and James Edwin who died in 1900.
The deceased resided on a farm in the Town of Otter Creek for many years, later renting and moving to Augusta, where he engaged in the implement and seed business. He retired about two years ago.
Funeral services were held from the M. E. Church, Augusta on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 1933, Rev. Charles G. Brown officiating. Interment was in the Thompson Valley Cemetery. The brethren of Augusta Lodge, No. 181, Free and Accepted Masons, of which the deceased was a member, were in charge, Brother H. S. Livermore giving the burial service. The pall bearers were brethren Theo. Anderson, Fred Dittmer, Geo. Warner, Will Brown, E. H. Winter and Cecil Bennett.
Surviving to mourn his departure and to cherish his memory are one daughter, Mrs. Wm. L. Edington of Augusta, one sister, Mrs. U. H. York of Superior, two brothers, Will of Valley City, N. D. and Charles of Northern Canada and a step-son, C. L. Page of Osseo, Wis. Also three grandchildren and an aged sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary A. Wood, who lived in his home many years of late.
All will remember the deceased as a kindly gentleman. He made friends easily and held them always. As a son, brother, husband, father, friend and neighbor he was above reproach, an exemplary citizen, a good man, one who lived a life of probity and uprightness.
The old time friends and neighbors extend their sincere sympathy to the sorrowing relatives in their bereavement. The passing of the deceased is a great grief to all.
"And a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; As rivers of waters in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land."
