Edgar L. Arter, 83, of Littlestown, died at his home, Wedsneday afternoon. State police at Gettysburg who were called to the Arter home attributed death to a hanging. They noted that Mr. Arter had health problems.

He was the son of the late Alva and Lillie Markle Arter.

He was born in Carroll County, Maryland and was a retired farmer.

Surviving is his wife, Carrie N. Leppo Arter; children, Kenneth W. Arter of Frederick, Md., Mrs. Arlene M. Hinton of Hattiesburg, Miss., Mrs. Marian G. Crushong of Gettysburg, and Robert L Arter Sr., of Littlestown; 24 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; brothers and sisters, Mrs. Carrie Hoff, Carroll Arter, Mrs. Catherine Mayers and Lester Arter, all of Littlestown, Walter Arter of York.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning at 9:30 at the Littles' Funeral Home, Littlestown, with Rev. Ralph J. Mehle, pastor of Christ United Church of Christ, officiating. Interment will be in Penn Memorial Gardens. (Also known now as Marburg Memorial Gardens, Hanover)
