Abbie Snapp Arnold, 103, was born October 9, 1897, the ninth child in a family of ten to Charles Franklin Snapp and Elizabeth Jane Flinn Snapp of McHue, Independence County, Arkansas, and died January 12, 2001, in Little Rock. She attended elementary school at Jamestown and graduated from Batesville High School in 1916. Her first teaching experience was in 1912 when she was fifteen years old at Blowing Spring where she boarded with a local family. In 1916 and 1917, she lived with her parents and taught the third and fourth grades in Jamestown. She attended State Teacher's College in Conway from 1918 to 1920 when she became principal of the Batesville Elementary School, remaining there until 1926.

She married Carl Arnold of Walnut Grove, AL, on September 5, 1923, and they had three children born from 1927 to 1932. When the youngest child began first grade in 1938, she returned to teaching at Desha High School where she taught until 1955.

She attended Lyon College in the summer sessions and received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1955. She accepted a position as head of the English department of Crossett High School where she taught from 1955 to 1960 when she retired.

Lyon College recognized her contribution to education by giving her the Eta Sigma Outstanding Educator Award in 1980 and the Friend of Education Award in 1990. In Batesville she was an active member of the First Methodist Church, Athena Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Independence County chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Kaufman of Little Rock, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Arnold; two sons, William J. Arnold and Carl F. Arnold; and one grandson, R. Brent Arnold.

Services were planned for Tuesday, January 16, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Batesville. Burial was to follow services at the Oaklawn Cemetery, with arrangements by Roller-Crouch Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were to be her grandsons, Blair, Guy, and William Arnold, John and Kenneth Kaufman; and a great-grandson, William Arnold. Honorary pallbearers were to be Thomas Dennis, Marcus Halbrook, Charles,. C. R., Pete and James Snapp.
