Graveside services for Irene A. Bates, 82, Ottawa, were Wednesday at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa. Mrs. Bates died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at Olathe Medical Center. She was born Feb. 12, 1924, in Missouri, the daughter of D.W. and Alvina Maria Neioff Arnold. She grew up in Ottawa and attended Ottawa High School, where she later worked as a cook. She also worked for the Ottawa Sale Barn as a cook and at Ottawa Retirement Village. She married Floyd E. Mitchell Sr. They divorced. She married Lavon C. Bates on Feb. 14, 1976, in Ottawa. He died June 24, 2006. Survivors include two sons, Gene Mitchell, Baldwin, and Terry Mitchell, Ottawa; a daughter, Juanita Schump, Baldwin; two brothers, David Arnold, Ottawa, and Francis Arnold, Avondale, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Family visitation Tuesday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa. Memorials to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, c/o the funeral home, Ottawa.
