Mrs. Arnold was born in Bucklin, Missouri January 4 1860, and died at her home in this city, Nov 17,1920, at the age of 60 years, 10 months and 13 days. Funeral services were held at her home on Friday, November 19, at two o'clock, Reverend Mayo of the Presbyterian church of this city officiating, after which interment was made in Prairie Grove cemetery.
Her maiden name was Martha Jane Brammer and she spent her girlhood years in her home community where there still remain one brother and a number of more distant relatives to mourn her loss. After her marriage to Benjamen S. Arnold they came to Kansas and settled in Chase county since which time the family has continued to make their home in this county. Previous to this there has been one death in the family, that of the second son, Samuel Renny Arnold, which occurred June 24, 1906. Her third oldest son Raymond Albert had left Kansas about 1905 while working for the railroad which has taken him to Seattle, Washington. Her other children, Anna, Don, Mamie, Ernest, and Robert were with her during, the many months of her illness and every possible care was given her. Two of her sons, Ernest and Robert, were in the Service for long periods And the strain occasioned by their absence, although she was always cheerful and refused to admit being worried, undoubtedly did much to undermine her health which had always been excellent.
Through all her years, good health and cherry optimism formed one of her most marked characteristics. Her love of the sunshine and the outdoors, her garden, her flowers and all growing things were a part of her wholesome, outlook on life.
As a mother she gave of herself unstintedly. No task was too hard, no effort was too much, no sacrifice was too great if it were for the good of her family. The welfare of her children was the business of her life and she gave it her undivided attention and brought to its accomplishment a rare, combination of the most sterling qualities of character. Her insight and quick sympathies made her a good friend as well as a good mother and there are many who will greatly miss her friendship. For her family, the loss is a most grievous one.

MRS. M. J. ARNOLD DEAD, Mrs. M. J. Arnold died at her home in this city at 9:00 o'clock this (Wednesday) morning, following an illness which has extended over several months. While her death was not unexpected yet it is a severe shock to her children and her many friends and neighbors of this city and vicinity. The funeral has been set for 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon, November 19th, and will be held at the home, Rev. H. B. Mayo, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city, will preach the sermon, after which interment will be made in Prairie Grove cemetery, west of the city.
Five of Mrs. Arnold's children, all but one, have been with her during the last weeks of her life and have ministered to her with all the love and tenderness that it was possible for them to give and this brought a great comfort to her during her last days. Mrs. Arnold was 60 years of age and has been a resident of Chase County for the past 38 or 39 years, having lived in this city for the last ten or twelve years. The many friends and neighbors extend to the bereaved children their heartfelt sympathy in their great sorrow.
