The sudden demise of Fred Arnold came as a shock to relatives and friends here although he had been in poor health for a number of years.
He was a son of Jacob and Catherine Arnold, deceased. He was born at Turner, Ill., February 24th, 1861 and passed away Saturday evening, August 19th, 1933, at the age of 68 years, 5 mouths and 26 days.
When Mr. Arnold was two years old he came with his parents to Cono township(Buchanan County IA), living where Mrs. Carrie Arnold resides and after his marriage he moved to different. Cono farms. His entire career as a farmer was spent in this neighborhood.
On September 30, 1891 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Kress.
To this union were born six children. 4 girls and 2 sons. Mrs. Esther Sherretts of Independence, Mrs. Mary Blankenburg, Quasqueton; Mrs. Millie Sherretts, Waterloo, Mrs. Luella Worstall, of here, Gilbert Arnold, of Marengo, Wis. and John Arnold, of here. There are eighteen grandchildren, three brothers and three sisters living who are: William, Jacob, of Cono: Daniel, Walker: Mrs. Earl Zimpfer. Mrs. Paul Kimmerlee. of Cono and Mrs. Rome Wallace, of Independence. One brother and two sisters preceded him in death. One sister, Mrs. Rome Wallace. who is In Canada, was unable to be present at the funeral.
Mr. Arnold had been in ill health for about twenty-nine years. He was uncomplaining and patient In his suffering, enduring his suffering with unusual grace and fortitude. He was a charter member of the Cono Center Presbyterian church. He was converted during Capt. O'Brien's meetings held in the school house and united with the church at its organization under Rev. Wiggins as pastor. In the missing of Mr. Arnold the community has lost a much respected loyal and a valuable citizen. He filled his office in the home and neighborhood with christian grace.
Services were conducted from the home at 1:30 a. m. and at 2 p. m. from the Cono Center church Tuesday. August 22nd, Rev. A. G. Stewart, officiating with Rev. Long of Quasqueton Union church, assisting. Mr. and Mrs. C. Kress and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Reed of Quasqueton sang with Mrs. Lester Hekel of Quasqueton. accompanied as pianist. Burial was made in the Quasqueton cemetery. The pallbearers were: Charles Butterfield, Lawrence Nieukirk, Frank Heiserman, Homer Daker, Albert Polk and Andrew Kuhn.
Those from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. arid Mrs. Gilbert Arnold and family of Marengo, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Scott Sherretts and daughter Beulah of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Irving Arnold, Mt. Auburn; Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Mildred Jamason, Rev, and Mrs. Waggle, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Zimpfer, Mr. and Mrs. A. McCalley and family, all of Independence beside a host of sympathizing friends and relatives from Quasqueton, Rowley and Walker.
s/o Jacob Arnold, Sr. and Susanna Katherina (Kautz) Arnold, second of ten children, married Anna Kress on September 30, 1891, father of Esther (Mrs. Ray Sherrets), Mary (Mrs. Arch Blankenburg), Gilbert, Millie (Mrs. Willard Bright), Luella (Mrs. William Worstal) and John.
