Phyllis Arnes Hoefer, 87, following several years of declining health, died on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005.

Born on Aug. 9, 1918, in Barronett to Melvin B. and Grace Faulkner Arnes, she was christened Phyllis Grace and grew to maturity amongst a large loving family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as many friends. As a child, she began piano lessons in Barronett and then continued her studies in Cumberland, riding the train to and from lessons. She also helped in the family business. She became actively involved in the church music ministry, first in the Barronett-Heart Lake-Timberland Lutheran Free Church parish and then, later in life, in Salem Lutheran Church in Shell Lake.

Following graduation from Cumberland High School (1935), where she had been involved in music activities, she attended Macalester College in St. Paul for one year, then completed a business curriculum at Minneapolis Business College and entered employment as a clerk in the athletic department office at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. There she met her future husband, Harold Hoefer, who was at the time a student in chemical engineering.

They were married on Sept. 23, 1939, following his graduation and having secured employment in the St. Louis, Mo., area.

After her husband's discharge from the U.S. Army following World War II, Phyllis, Harold, and their children returned to Barronett in 1948 and then moved to Shell Lake in 1951. She resumed her earlier music activities with the church and was a popular accompanist for weddings and funerals in area churches. She also offered individual instruction on piano and organ for many years.

Entering employment as a clerk-typist for the Washburn County Welfare Department, she eventually became administratively responsible for the Surplus Commodities program and then the Food Stamp program.

Beyond family, friends, and church, Phyllis enjoyed travel, and on one trip was able to travel around the world, with extended stops in Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. On separate trips she toured Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Central America, South America, Mexico, and Hong Kong-Japan. She returned from each of these adventures with many pictures and souvenirs, plus copious notes describing her experiences along the way, which she was eager to share with any who were interested in the hope that their curiosity and desire to learn might be stimulated.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother and sister; six uncles; seven aunts; one brother-in-law; one grandson; one niece; and several cousins.

She is survived by her son, Lon, of the Twin Cities; daughters, Susan (Phil) Sampon of Adams and Patricia (Dale) Livingston of rural Shell Lake; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one aunt; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; one niece; one nephew; and many cousins.

By her expressed desire and pre-arrangement, her remains were cremated. Also, she decided to forego a formal funeral or memorial service.

A graveside service for the family was held at Lakeside Cemetery in Barronett at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15.

Memorials in her name may be offered to Salem Lutheran Church of Shell Lake or to Barronett Lutheran Church.
