J. Hal Arnell, 57, passed away August 18, 1999 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Born October 30, 1941 in Montpelier, Idaho to La Grande M. and Garnet Mourtsen Arnell. Married Lynda Puzey in 1968. Later married Elizabeth Stout Kirk in February 1993.

Hal received Bachelors and Masters degrees in Zoology and a PhD in Entomology, all from the University of Utah. He also received a Masters in Public Health from the University of Utah. He served an LDS Mission to the Midwestern States.

Hal was a scientist and naturalist. During his years as a graduate student and later while employed at UCLA, he researched and collected insects throughout the west and made collecting trips to Panama and Brazil. His love for the study of insects and animals extended throughout his life. He enjoyed sharing this passion with others. His most recent interest was in sea life, maintaining a tropical aquarium. He was a devoted University of Utah basketball and football fan. He was intelligent, well-read, and always learning.

Survived by wife, Elizabeth; son, Brian; stepdaughters, Melissa and Laura Kirk; brother, Guy E. (Lyn Ann); father-in-law, Reed A. Stout; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Janet, who died in infancy.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 21, 1999, 10 a.m., at the South Cottonwood 4th Ward, 980 E. Revere Cr. (5600 So.), where friends may call one hour prior to services at the ward. Funeral Directors, Larkin Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers family suggests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 340 E. 400 South, SLC, UT 84111, ph. 363-3024.
