Murray B. Armstrong Sr., 82, passed away Sunday, 9 October 2011 at his residence. Born in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Walter Thomas and Bessie McCarty Armstrong. He attended Cropper High School and Georgetown College and was well known as an extraordinary basketball player. A devout Christian, he was a builder and farmer, and served his country in the United States Army. An enthusiastic outdoorsman, he once owned and operated the Kentucky Wonderland Shooting Preserve and was a softball coach for many years for the Bagdad Ruritan Club Youth League team. Formerly active on the Shelby County Democratic Executive Committee, he served as Wendell Ford's Shelby County chairman.
View MapSurvivors include his wife, Sue Armstrong of Cropper; his sons, Dale Armstrong of Louisville, Patrick Trotta of Chicago, and Kevin Trotta and Murray B. Armstrong, Jr., both of Cropper; his daughters, Debbie Yeary of Shelbyville, Donna Virg of Simpsonville, Gina Carey of Shelbyville, and Dyana Butler of Burlington, Vermont; his brother, Rollie Armstrong of Elmburg; and his sister, Dorothy Long of Cropper; his ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, 13 October 2011 at the Hall-Taylor Funeral Home of Shelbyville, with Reverend Jim Cavendish officiating. Interment will be in Cropper Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M., until service time on Thursday at Hall-Taylor. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hosparus.
