LA MARQUE — Bettie "Big Mama" Armstead, 73, of La Marque, died Tuesday, June 5, at her residence. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 320 Bell Drive in Texas City. The Rev. M.C. Bridges will officiate. Burial will follow at Rising Star Cemetery, under the direction of Mainland Funeral Home. A wake will be held 6:30-7:30 p.m. today at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church.
Born January 12, 1917 in Huntsville, she was the youngest child of the late Berry and Rosalie Irving Scott. Mrs. Armstead was a homemaker. She was an active member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church and remained dedicated until her passing. She was founder and president of the Pastor's Aid and actively involved in both Sunday School and Bible Band at the church.
Survivors include a devoted husband, Frank D.Armstead; daughters, Gladys Bell and Marie Albert, both of Galveston, and Karen L. Armstead of Austin; six grandchildren, Sandra Bell, and Clint Bell of Galveston, Leonard Bell Jr. of Oceanside, Calif., Rhonda Barkins of Augusta, Ga., Dwayne and Dohn Albert of Huntsville; six great-grandchildren,
Zerrick and Derrick Bell of Palmdale, Calif.; Kristi and Brent Albert of Augusta, Ga., and Dohn Corey and Quentin Albert of Huntsville; one sister, Mrs. Roberta Gamble of Huntsville; devoted family and friends, cousins, Jane Walker and Faye Dawsey; friends, Sadie Brockett, Ada Demerson, Kitana Dickey, Minnie Lee Linscomb and Sarah Randall; her
Progressie Baptist Church family; and other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers are Billy Crowder, James Elder, J.P. Lewis, Cuney Robbins, Willard Thompson, and W.D. Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church.
