He was the youngest son of Thomas and Catherine Flyte Armitage from Pennsylvania and China with siblings: Mary Elizabeth (1824), Samuel (1828), Rachael (1832), Joseph (1834), Mary Ann (1836), Thomas (1837), John (1840), Harvey (1842), and William (1847). James was the grandson of Shubart and Sarah Macomber Armitage.
