Charles Richard Armistead was the fourth child of James Marion Armistead and his first wife, Alice Leatha Carpenter. His mother died when he was ten years old and he grew up fast, going to work with his father at the logging camp as a cook. He also took care of his younger sisters.

Charles was inducted into the United States Army in Union, Missouri on October 3, 1917. He trained at Camp Funsten in Kansas. They were trained with wooden guns. He participated in six battles when he served over seas in France. The regiments he served in were 59 Company 164, Company B 354 Infantry, Company G 30 Infantry and Company D 3rd Army Composite that marched across Germany after the war. He was discharged Honorably on September 27, 1919.

When Charles returned home, he met his future wife, Emma Gerling, in St. Louis where she was rooming at a boarding house with Charles cousins, Minnie and Clara Armistead, who were daughters of his father's brother, George E. Armistead.

Emma Sophia Anna Gerling married Charles Richard Armistead on November 24, 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri. To this union, two children were born. Vivian Emma in 1925 and Charles James in 1928.

Charles and Emma Armistead made their home in St. Louis, Missouri. Emma working in the Shoe Factories and Charles holding several jobs starting as a tailor, milk delivery, and finally getting a job with Busch Seltzer Brothers Diesel Engine Company (who made diesel engines for large ships) as a moulder. Before he retired he worked as a security guard for Anheuser Busch Company.
Charles and Emma retired to St. Clair, Missouri where they bought a little one bedroom home.
