Decatur: Jimmie Gene Armes, 81, went to be with his Lord Sunday, June 5, 2011 in Decatur.
Graveside service is 10 a.m. Wednesday in Oaklawn Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 8th at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Roy Spore and Rick Ross officiating. Family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home.
Pallbearers include Gene Blagg, Charles Burton, J.E. Carson, Bonnie Cocanougher, Joe Lambert, Gay Leake, Ray Leake, Truitt Leake, Paul LeBoeuf, Charles Long, Dan Maeyers, Royce Raven, Glenn Smith, Alford Talley, and Bill Wiley. Honorary pallbearers include members of the Men's Sunday School class.
Jim was born on October 24, 1929 at the family home in Boonesville, Texas to Chester Cheves and Vera Beatrice (Jennings) Armes. He graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1947 where he was president of his senior class.
On June 17, 1950, he married the former Marye Nella Brooks of Decatur. He served in the United States Navy and then attended college on the GI Bill earning a Bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from the University of Texas in 1956. He retired in 2001 as a plant manager for Eaglemotive Industries Fort Worth after enjoying a long career with several outstanding companies, including General Tire and Rubber Company, Collins Radio Company and Poca Graphite.
Jim's life was characterized by his faith, his love for his family and his dedicated service to church and community. Jim was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church and later a Sunday school teacher at the First United Methodist Church. He was elected to two terms on the Decatur ISD school board, was appointed to the Decatur District Water Board and the Decatur Planning and Zoning Commission. Since his retirement, he focused his energy in support of the Wise Area Relief Mission, where he served on the Board of Directors for many years and a term as President of the Board.
Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marye Nella Armes; daughter, Lori Armes of Frisco; son, Joseph Armes and wife, Kelly of Dallas, sister, Joyce Cheves and husband, Norris of Bridgeport; grandchildren, Benjamin Lamm and wife, Rebekah of Austin, Annie and John Armes of Dallas; nieces, Kay Walker and husband, George of Cedar Hill, Cindy Meyers and husband, Fred of Brideport and Marsha Scroggins and husband, Mike of Fort Worth. Family requests memorials be made to the Wise Area Relief Mission, 300 North Trinity Street, Decatur, Texas 76234.
