New Market - Albert J. Armantrout, prominent New Market businessman for more than 50 years, died at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville after an illness of 3 months. He was 87. Mr. Armantrout began at the Farmers State Bank in New Market as an assistant cashier Dec 4, 1913. He was appointed cashier Jan 7, 1915 and became president of the bank in January 1929. He served as president until his retirement in Jan 1965. He served on the board of diretors from Jan of 1915 until his death. In 1964 he was honored by the Indiana Banking Association for having completed 50 years service in the profession. Mr. Armantrout also had served as treasurer of the New Market Methodist Church for 60 years. He was town clerk for number of years and served as a director and an official of the New Market Telephone Co many years. A Montgomery County native, he was born Feb 24, 1879, a son of James and Sara Childers Amantrout. He was married to Mary Ethel Armstrong in New Market May 28, 1902. Surviving are the widow; a son, Leroy of Westfield, NJ; three grandsons, 8 great grandchildren; a niece Mrs. Buford Friend of New Market; and a nephew, William Swindler of Nicholsville, Ky. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Noble Reeves Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Payne of Rockville and Rev. Walter Porter officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery in Crawfordsville. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday.
