SULLY - Dormand Allen Arkema, 80, of Sully died Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Sully Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Jack Gray officiating. Burial will be at Sully Cemetery. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella is handling arrangements.

A fellowship time will be held at the church following the burial. Memorials will be accepted to the Sully Christian Grade School.

The son of Oney and Katie (Bruxvoort) Arkema, he was born July 29, 1923, in Sully. He attended Sully Christian Grade School. He then made his home with his parents and 11 siblings until he was drafted into the United States Army in November of 1948. He served in active duty during the Korean War and was discharged in December of 1949. On June 27, 1950, he married Beulah Elizabeth Newendorp in Leighton. Following their marriage, Dormand was again re-activated into the Army and served from September 1950 until October 1951. Following this discharge he returned to his employment at the Sully Cooperative Exchange in Sully.

In 1953 Mr. Arkema and his wife moved to the farm north of Sully. They farmed there until he retired in 1987. It was at this time they moved into Sully. He enjoyed woodworking and growing roses.

Mr. Arkema was a lifelong member of Sully Christian Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and an elder. He also served on the Sully Christian Grade School Board.

Survivors include his wife; three children and their spouses, Duane and Mary (De Penning) Arkema of Lynnville, Marla and Carroll Fopma of Sully and Michael and Denise (Van Der Wilt) Arkema of Sully; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; five sisters and five brothers and their spouses, Marjorie (Freemon) Van Gorp of Oskaloosa, Bernard and Cornelia Arkema of Sully, Betty and the Rev. Earl Dykema of Cedar Rapids, June and William Rozendaal Jr. of Pella, Lewis and Jean Arkema of Sioux Center and Ed and Leona Arkema of Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Iva Harthoorn of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Doyle V. Arkema; a brother, John Arkema.
