Mrs. Irene V. Peska, 85, of Brooklyn, and died Sunday, February 25, 2007, in Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 AM, Thursday, March 1, 2007, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn. Rev. Brian Shepley, Pastor, officiated and the musician was Marilyn Kriegel. Casket-bearers were Nathan Arens, John Fetter, Michelle Goldsmith, Jennifer Peska, James Moyer and Justin Peska. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn.
A scripture service for Mrs. Peska was held at 7:30 PM Wednesday at the Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn.
A memorial fund has been established.
Irene Victoria Arens Peska was born August 3, 1921, near Belle Plaine, Iowa. Her parents were Henry Arens and Louise Vols Arens.
Irene received her education in a rural school and the Hartwick School. Starting in 1943 she worked at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. Later Irene returned home to care for her mother who was ill.
On October 19, 1946, Irene was married to Alfred Louis Peska at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Brooklyn. They were the parents of two children, Larry and Jeannette. They farmed near Blairstown and from 1953 to 1985 near Brooklyn. They moved into Brooklyn in 1985. Mr. Peska died November 17, 2004. She then lived in Friendship Manor, Grinnell, and at Sylvan Woods, Ottumwa, returning to Brooklyn and became a resident of Brooklyn Community Estates.
Mrs. Peska was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn, and St. Patrick's Altar & Rosary Society. Irene enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing cards, fishing on a boat, gardening and sewing.
Her parents, her husband and three brothers, Charley Arens, Rene Arens and Julian Arens, preceded her in death.
Surviving are a son, Larry Peska and his wife Joyce of Flower Mound, Texas; a daughter, Jeannette Moyer and husband Mike of Ottumwa, Iowa; one sister, Evelyn Fetter of Brooklyn; and four grandchildren, James (Heather) Moyer, Michelle (Chad) Goldsmith, Jennifer Peska and Justin Peska.
