Matt Arens, 80, Kellogg, died Thursday morning at St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home where he had resided the past six months.

He was born Dec. 29, 1892, in Wabasha. In his early years, he worked at the Kuehn Mercantile Store in Wabasha and the John Costello Store in Kellogg.

He was co-owner of the McDonough-Arens store at Kellogg which was in operation from 1916 to 1946. For the next 10 years, he worked at the Red Owl Store in Wabasha.

His marriage to Bessie Odell took place in 1916 in Kellogg. She preceded him in death in 1952. He married Emma Schmidt in 1954. She also preceded him in death in 1960.

He served as village clerk of Kellogg for 20 years before retiring in 1970.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a former Grand Knight of that organization. He also was a member of the Southeastern Minnesota Beekeepers Assn.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Orville (Betty) Dittrich of Altura and Mrs. William (Elinor) Graner of Kellogg; four sons, Odell, Robert and William of Kellogg and Richard of Webster; 49 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Marking of Kellogg.

In addition to his two wives, he was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial was offered Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg with the Rev. Fr. James Speck officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers wer John, Terence, and Michael Arens; Kevin Graner, Don and Joseph Dittrich.

The Abbott-Wise Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
