Cora Estelle Blenkhorn was born in Boston, Massachusetts Feb 27 1899, the daughter of George A. and Mary Ellen(Percy) Blenkhorn. Her parents were recent immigrants from Nova Scotia. Her father was a blacksmith. She had two sisters, one died in infancy, and two brothers. She grew up in the Dorchester area of Boston.

She met her husband while on a visit to her grandmother in Nova Scotia and married him in 1916. They lived in Nova Scotia for a time and eventually moved to Amherst, Massachusetts where her husband John took a position at Massachusetts Agricultural College (which later became the University of Massachusetts) where he worked until his retirement in 1960. They lived at several different addresses in the Amherst area during those years.

They had 5 children: Jean Marie, Gladys Glencross, George Malcolm, John Merritt, and William Prescott. George died as a small child which was a great sorrow to her, but all 4 of the rest of the children grew up in Amherst and married and had successful lives.

They retired to Florida where John died in 1965. Cora outlived him by many years. She continued to live in Florida, but came north to spend time with some of her children and grandchildren in the summers. She eventually became unable to live alone and spent her last few years in a retirement home in Yarmouth, Maine near her daughter Gladys. She died there on April 22, 1989 at the age of 90.

Although I did not get to spend a lot of time with my grandmother since she lived far from us, I remember always looking forward to her visits. I particularly remember that she was a wonderful cook. When my grandfather was living, they owned a little cottage in New Hampshire where they spent time in the summer. We often visited them there and I remember the delicious meals she would prepare for us. I remember a time when she came to visit when my husband and I were first married and she gave me a lot of helpful tips and recipes. She was an outspoken lady and I remember that she and my mother sometimes had their differences, but I think it was because they were a lot alike in many ways.
