Edward was the son of William S. and Ann A. Archer.
He enlisted and mustered on June 3, 1862 at Fort Drewry, VA as a Corporal into Company "C", Virginia Southside Heavy Artillery. He was paroled at Appomattox Court House on April 10, 1865, and took the Oath of Allegiance in Richmond on May 30.
After the War, he farmed in Chesterfield County. He and wife Helen R. Nott were married in Richmond on April 30, 1868. They had at least six children: Katherine, Amelia, Lillian, May, Edward D. and Nellie.
