Angelina Malatesta's 1st husband was Angelo Leverone, who she married in Italy. They came to America, first going to PA, then to Calaveras Co. about 1854. In 1857 Angela filed for divorce from him, claiming he abused her and was often drunk. Witnesses agreed with those claims. Angelo counter claimed that she was unfaithful and had been living with John Arata for about 2 months. Their children, listed in the 1857 divorce file, were Giaccomo 14, a daughter aged 12 who was in Italy, Giovanni Battista 8, Manuel 6, Augusta/Augustus 3, baby 6 months. The baby was Anna Catherine Leverone Casassas and Manuel was William Manuel Leverone who was born in PA. Angela appears to have been a sister of Rosa Maletesta Figaro and of John Arata's 1st wife who died in Italy. the Figaro family also lived in PA before coming to Calaveras Co in 1856 and they purchased land from Angelo Leverone near Vallecito when they arrived.
