Adelaido "Lido" A. Aragon
Adelaido A. Aragon, age 94, lifelong resident of Salida, passed away on Monday October 1, 2012 at his home in Salida. Mr. Aragon was born November 21, 1917 in Espanola, NM to Juan and Magelena (Vigil) Aragon.
Mr. Aragon married Clara Nieto on October 16, 1941 in Canon City, CO. He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he served as an usher and on Parish Council for many years. Mr. Aragon worked as a postal clerk at the Salida Post Office for 23 years retiring in 1986. He also worked at Safeway, Boy's Market and City Market along with delivering the Pueblo Chieftain for 18 years. Mr. Aragon was instrumental in opening the Salida Hot Springs Pool to minorities along with being instrumental in getting minorities the chance to serve on jury duty. He served his country in the Army during World War II. During his time in the service, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and served as message center chief with a signal battalion in the South Pacific. He supervised a message center crew of 30 enlisted men. He directed message center work to insure speed, accuracy and security. He also encoded and decoded classified messages. Mr. Aragon enjoyed to sing and dance, spending time with his family, collecting stamps and coins, fly fishing, gardening , crossword puzzles, reading and being around people. He was known around town as "Mr. Handsome". He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Mr. Aragon was preceded in death his parents, brothers John Aragon, Alphonzo Aragon, Leonard Aragon and Martin Aragon. Sisters Anita Martinez, Josephine Roberts and Esther Arguello. Son-in-law Hank Vartanian and in-laws Fidel Nieto and Mollie Martin. He is survived by his wife Clara Aragon of Salida, CO, daughters Joanna (John) Ordaz of Salida, CO, Jeanne Vartanian of Tuston, CA, Donna (Don) Martinez of Pueblo, CO and Janis (Bryant) McDowell of Aurora, CO. Sisters Mildred Aragon of Salida, CO, Regina (Jim) Nance of Salida, CO, Irene Schwitzer of Salida, CO, 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing is set for 1-4 PM Friday October 5, 2012 at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Recitation of the Holy Rosary is set for 7:00 PM Friday October 5, 2012 at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Mass of the Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 AM Saturday October 6, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery. Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to the Angel of Shavano Hospice, St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Disabled American Veterans through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
