Orbie L. Appling, 91, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 28, 2007 at home after a brief illness.
He was born July 2, 1916 in Grapevine, a son of Alva Appling and Beulah Fikes Appling.
Mr. Appling was reared and received his early education in Grant County, where he attended the Fikes School House and Grapevine schools.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 58 years. Through his work with the union, Mr. Appling worked on many projects throughout the state, including the construction of International Paper Company and Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff and several hospitals in Little Rock before his retirement in 1981.
Mr. Appling was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he attended the Fidelis Sunday School Class. He served on the Board of Directors of the Ramick Cemetery Association since 1949. Mr. Appling also faithfully attended the Wednesday morning Men's Prayer Breakfast at First Methodist Church.
He was an avid gardener and continued to work his vegetable garden until his death. Anyone dropping by to see him left with a sack of fresh vegetables.
Mr. Appling was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lola Mitchell Appling; two sons, Alva Appling and Richard Pope; an infant daughter, Martha Lynn Appling; and a sister, Ora L. Reed.
Survivors include his wife, Ellene Wilhelm Appling, whom he married November 11, 1995 in Pine Bluff; daughter, Julia Schrantz of Irving, Texas; sister, Mary Lee Fields of Roseville, Michigan; grandson, Dr. Jim Schrantz, Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas; two granddaughters, Laura Hunt of Morrilton, Arkansas and Julie Plassachert of Los Angeles, California; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. At Wesley United Methodist Church with Reverend Jason Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow in Ramick Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6-8 P.M. at Robinson's.
