Death of Franz Appl
Franz Appl was born in Moravia, Austria, May 10th, 1846, died July 12, 1907, of stomach trouble, age 61 years, 2 months and 2 days. He served in the army in Austria three years. He was twice married. His first companion dying October 31, 1873 and was laid to rest in the Old Country. His last wife passed away October 28, 1893, and was buried in the Leoti Cemetery. To their union were born eleven children of whom nine still survive, six sons and three daughters. Two of the sons live on the homestead and two near by. One son is a Missouri Pacific engineer, running between Horace and Hoisington, and one lives in Rush County near their first home. The daughters are married and live in other localities.
Mr. Appl left Austria in 1885 and came to Rush County, Kansas, where he lived two years and then moved to this county where he has since resided for over twenty years, being one of the oldest settlers in the county.
The deceased had suffered for more than two years with stomach trouble from which he found no relief, but was only seriously sick a few days. Mr. Appel was an honest, industrious faithful citizen, and a member of the Catholic Church. The funeral service was held at the home last Sunday morning and conducted by Rev. R. W. Hodson of the M.E. Church of this city. A large company of friends had gathered to witness the last sad rites of an esteemed neighbor and friend. The remains were laid to rest by the side of his last companion in the Leoti cemetery. - Leoti Standard
