His mother filed for a pension in 1884 as he was her sole support.
In a July 6, 1888 column on page six of the Columbus Dispatch detailing events concerning the Grand Army of the Republic, is this notice: "The adjutant of McCoy Post has in his possession the discharge papers of Eugene Anthony , a private of Company, E, twenty-eighth Kentucky volunteer infantry, which were picked up on the streets of this city, and can be placed in the hands of the owner by application as above."
