Geoffrey Rupert Anson, 68, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, June 5, 1997, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born Jan. 28, 1929, in South Ascot, England, he was the son of the late Rupert and Marion Ruthven Emma Halliday Anson. He was educated at Lambrook School, Dartmouth Naval College, and graduated from Sandhurst Military Academy as a second lieutenant. He was commissioned to the Fourth Queens Own Hussars and served in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Hohne, Germany. He emigrated to Canada in 1952 and worked for A.V. Rowe in Toronto. He joined the Governor General's Horse Guards. He also was employed at Roddis Lumber and Veneer of Canada.
Most recently, he was employed at Besse Forest Products in Gladstone, Mich., in log procurement and custom cutting. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Martinsburg. He played rugby for the Toronto Barbarians and caddied for the World Championship Golf Tournament in Chicago.
In 1954, he boxed in Maple Leaf Gardens in the Jack Dempsey White Hope Tournament. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce; Rotary Club of Presque Isle, Maine; and the Sault Ste. Marie 48th Highlanders. He was president of the Saute Ste. Marie Golf and Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Verna Grace Hall Anson, whom he married in 1957; one daughter, Jennifer Marion Anson of Spencer, Iowa; two sons, George Rupert Anson of Thornborough, England, and Christopher Leonard Anson of Phoenix; two sisters, Rosemary Coombe of Hinton, St. George, and Felicity Woodhouse of Shepherds, England; one brother, Col. T.P. Anson of Hardwick, England; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Edward Peter Anson.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Martinsburg. The Rev. Jack T. Sudor Jr. will officiate. Burial will be private. The family suggests memorial donations be made to American Heart Association, 1319 Quarrier St., Charleston, W.Va. 25301; and Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 W. King St., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.
