Ruth "Duffy" Anson (1925 - 2010) Ruth "Duffy" Anson, a devoted mother, died peacefully on Sunday, October 24, 2010. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Henry O. Anson (Hank). Duffy was born on March 4, 1925, in Stoneham, Massachusetts to William and Sadie (Nonnie) Ashby. She graduated from Stoneham High School and Kathryn Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston. In 1946, she married a handsome young naval officer, Hank, and embarked on a lifelong journey. She used to jokingly say that she thought they would never leave the cold winters of the northeast. It wasn't until after 12 years of marriage and five children, that she finally got to experience a winter without snow and snowsuits. Hank and Duffy never returned to the cold weather and instead this Bostonian learned to adjust to other areas of the country and their "unique accents," as she referred to anyone who wasn't from Boston. Duffy and Hank were stationed all over the U.S. during his 30 year career and eventually retired to Pensacola, FL where they had family and friends. She loved the Navy life but enjoyed more being a Navy wife. Duffy is survived by her six children: William Anson, Robert Anson, John (Ellen) Anson, Janet (John) Goodrich, Lisa (Harold) Grosholz, Sara Anson, and five grandchildren. She led an active social life during their 30 plus years of retirement. She was a member of the Association for Retarded Citizens, Special Steppers, ROWW, and many social clubs. She continued to stay active when they moved to Azalea Trace in 2006. Duffy enjoyed traveling, playing card games, and spending time with her family and friends. She will be terribly missed by her family. While Hank may have been the sailor in the family, Duffy was their "anchor."
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm Friday, October 29, 2010 at the Azalea Trace Auditorium.
Donations may be made to ARC Gateway, 1112 East Fairfield Drive, Pensacola, FL, 32503 in Duffy's memory.
