CAMBRIDGE -- Charles Ankenman, 88, died Monday (Nov. 23, 2009), at the Cambridge Memorial hospital.

He was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Norcatur, Kan., to Jacob and Eva (Bryant) Ankenman. In 1926 the family moved to a farm 10 miles southeast of Wilsonville. He later moved to a farm three miles east and a half mile south of Wilsonville and farmed this ground for the rest of his life. He graduated from Wilsonville High School in 1940.

On his 21st birthday in September of 1942, he was called to serve in the U.S. Army. In September 1943, he was on the Queen Mary and headed to England and France for the remainder of the war. He was discharged in 1946.

On July 24, 1946, he married Dorothy Manley on July 24, 1946 in Norton, Kan.

He was a member of the Wilsonville Baptist Church, holding many offices. He also served on the Wilsonville School Board and was a member of the Lions Club, the Cambridge American Legion Post and the Nebraska Cattle Feeders. In 1985, he and Dorothy moved to Cambridge where they joined the Congregational Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lauren: grandson, Joel; step-grandson, Rickie; three brothers, Donald, Neil and Bernard; and three sisters, Bernice Kasson, Eula Timmons and Doris Kasson.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three daughters, Rita and husband, Rick Bose and Janet and husband, Don Trosper all of Cambridge and Carol and husband, Joseph Rindone of Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, Kent of Glendale, Ariz., and Mark of San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Margurite Flora of Turlock, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren

Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Friday, at the Cambridge Congregational Church with Bill Weaver officiating. Inurnment will be in the Wilsonville Cemetery. Military honors will be preformed at the graveside.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be left in his name to either the Congregational Church in Cambridge or the Wilsonville Baptist-Christian Church.
