John Bernard Ankenbruck was first born son of German immigrants Martin Mathis Ankenbruck (1834-1922) and Elizabeth Martin (1842-1937). He was born March 10, 1866 in Allen County, Adams Township, Indiana where his father owned nine acres of farm land and made a living as a truck farmer. John had two siblings Mary Ann (1868-1945) and Frank Gustave (1873-1935). All three of the Ankenbruck children as well as their parents remained in the Fort Wayne area their entire lives and are all buried at the Fort Wayne Catholic Cemetery. John married Margaret Mausbaum at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fort Wayne on May 18, 1892 in a double ring ceremony. Margaret's sister, Mary married Louis Kiep. According to the newspaper account her parent's Bernard H. Masbaum and Margaret Burlager entertained 200 guests that evening. They were both German immigrants and members of St. Mary's Catholic Church and also residents of Allen County, Adams Township, Indiana. The newspaper speaks of dancing and entertainment for the guests. John Bernard and his wife had three children; Clara (1893-1972), Carl Bernard (1895-1963) and Helen (1899-1946). John Bernard established himself as a contractor in the Fort Wayne area known as Ankenbruck & Son. He built several homes including his own at 735 East Wayne Street as well as the rectory for St. Jude Catholic Church at 2130 Pemberton Boulevard in Fort Wayne and the school at St. Louis Besancon Catholic Church 15529 Lincoln Highway East New Haven, Indiana. He also built the home at 1015 Liberty Street where his son, Carl Bernard lived with his wife Cecelia App and their six children for most of their lives. In later years his Grandson Thomas John Ankenbruck, son of Carl Bernard remembers being in awe as he watched his Grandfather and Father draw up bids for future construction projects in what he fondly called "The Figuring Room," in his Grandfather's house. He loved hearing them discuss the ins and outs of the construction bids and the costs involved. John and Margaret were faithful members of St. Mary's Catholic Church their entire lives and remained at 735 East Wayne Street until John's death which occurred on March 30, 1950. His only son, Carl Bernard carried on the construction company Ankenbruck & Son until he retired in 1960 with his later years primarily devoted to St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church parish in Avilla, Indiana. It is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. Its current building was dedicated in 1878. It also has its own Catholic school and a small convent for its Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart. St. Mary's was also the site of the first motherhouse in America for the Franciscan sisters.in Avilla, Indiana.
