Ann Virginia Angell of Decatur, Georgia passed away in her home on May 11, 2016. She was 72 years old.

Ann was born to Jim and Virginia Angell on August 19, 1943 in Perry, Iowa. She grew up in Lexington, Kentucky with her siblings Susan, Jim and Mary Scott. She graduated from Henry Clay High School in Lexington in 1961 and then attended Florida State University, where she graduated in 1964. She married Cliff Freeman in 1965 and they had a son, Scott.

Ann spent her life devoted to education, and especially to Montessori education. In 1974, she traveled to Bergamo, Italy to study the Montessori elementary program at the International Center for Montessori Elementary Studies. There she compiled a meticulous set of albums documenting those lectures which are now posted online at her website http://www.annangell.com.

After returning from Italy, she spent much of her life teaching in Montessori schools throughout Atlanta, as well as several years as a professor at the University of Houston and 10 years teaching in a Montessori Charter school in Denver, Colorado. She obtained her PhD from Emory University in 1991 and continued her pursuit of knowledge throughout her life. In 2015, she published a book entitled The Romance of Teaching, which chronicled her Montessori classroom experience; a book she hoped would inspire teachers of all kinds to embrace Montessori education in their classrooms.

Ann loved nature, almost more than people. She knew the names of hundreds of flowers, trees and stars, sharing this knowledge with many generations. Her continuous love of the outdoors lead her on many camping trips with her students, hundreds of nature walks with friends, and an eternal love of trees, flowers and birds. Wherever she traveled, hiked, walked, swam or biked, she always took extra time to appreciate the wonder of nature's beauty. She never let the details of any experience pass her by.

As a teacher and friend, Ann impacted so many lives, it is hard to measure. The relationship she maintained with many of her students into their adult lives was a testament to her impact as a teacher. She believed in every child and person that she met, and inspired people to never underestimate their own greatness. She cherished her years helping to raise, together with her partner Chris von Lersner, Sabine and Kofi von Lersner.

A Memorial Service will be held for Ann Angell on Tuesday, May 17th, 2016 at 2:00 pm. Druid Hills Presbyterian Church, 1026 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30306
