Judge Joe Angel, former District Court judge and retired attorney died at the age of eighty-seven after a long and productive life.
He is survived by his wife, Tonie, a retired educator, his son Ronald and daughter-in-law Jacqueline of Austin, Texas, a grandson, Matthew, of Lexington, Massachusetts, his brother Dr. Frank Angel of Albuquerque.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Rita, a professor of music at the University of New Mexico. Judge Angel was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1915 and served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War.
He received an Honorable Discharge in 1945 and attended Highlands University on the GI bill. He went on to receive a law degree from the University of Denver College of Law in 1965. He practiced law in Albuquerque until being appointed District Court Judge for the fifth judicial district, which included San Miguel, Mora, and Guadalupe Counties. He served the state of New Mexico in that capacity for seventeen years until his retirement in 1983.
While on the bench, Judge Angel was instrumental in the consolidation of the cities of East and West Las Vegas. He was active in our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Las Vegas and assumed numerous fund-raising duties. Services will be held at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel on Thursday evening at 6:00 pm.
