William Andrus Passes Away
Man for 65 Years Known and Esteemed in Business Life of Ithaca Died at Home Today
William Andrus of the firm of Andrus & Church, who on March 15 last completed 65 years' business activity in this city, died at his home at 7:10 o'clock this morning. Mr. Andrus had been failing for some time from the infirmities incident to advanced age.
William Andrus was born in this city on May 11, 1837, the son of William Andrus, sr., a pioneer in Ithaca commercial life. A native of Connecticut, the elder William came to Ithaca and in 1824 established in the Miles Finch building, now the Rothschild store, a book store which grew into the business, which under several firm names in time operated as a large book selling, stationery, printing and book binding establishment.
Mr. Andrus, the younger, followed in his father's footsteps in his place of abode and in his business activities. His wife and one of his daughters, to whom he was greatly devoted, died several years ago.
In his youth the younger William was educated in the Ithaca Academy, and was a clerk in his father's store, where he became fully conversant with the nature and needs of the business. In the course of time he entered the firm and finally on his father's death, in 1870, became its active head. In all his career he showed not only business abilities of high order but careful habits and scrupulous regard for the principles of right which win general esteem and confidence in both commercial circles and the community at large.
Mr. Andrus had scholarly tastes and literary ability and appreciativeness; loved poetry, especially the works of Shakespeare, and wrote good verse; was fond of music, sang well and played the violin. In short, he combined with success in his chosen work the enjoyment of the fruits of an admirable and well-rounded character.
Mr. Andrus leaves one daughter, Miss Florence S. Andrus of this city, and a number of nephews and nieces of whom one is William Andrus Church, of the business firm.
The funeral will be held from the home, 138 Prospect Street, on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Rev. A.E. George, assisted by the Rev. Dr. William E. Griffis, will conduct the services. Friends are requested to omit flowers.
