Son of Thurston and Aminta D. (Holmes) Andrews.

On 12 Jul 1861 William, a pattern maker, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 22 years and 5 months old.

On 21 Oct 1861 William was taken prisoner at The Battle of Ball's Bluff, Leesburg, Virginia.

On 22 Feb 1862, William was released from prison and mustered out on 16 Feb 1863 at Boston due to disability.

On 16 Mar 1862 William, 23, married Harriet A. Brown, daughter of Solon F. and Elizabeth C. (Bettely) Brown, at West Boylston, Worcester County, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both. They were apparantly separated later.

Secondly, on 28 Feb 1884 William married Melissa B. Bancroft, 51, daughter of Timothy and Mary (Clark) Bancroft, at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, in a second marriage for both. (She was the widow Walker, at the time.).

He was a pall bearer at the burial of his fellow veteran, Henry S. Whittemore, on 22 Sep 1895 at Hope Cemetery, Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts.

He was enumerated in the 1910 US Federal Census on 15 Apr 1910 at Soldiers' Home, Crest Avenue, Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, where he died on 20 Apr 1913. He was 74 years and 2 months old.

(Note: Cemetery records indicate William H. Andrews was interred in this lot on April 23, 1913. His name is not on the monument, nor is there a separate gravestone for him. There is one veteran's flag on the lot.)
