Mary Elizabeth - the oldest daughter and first born of Oliver and Cornelia App was born September 1, 1892 in Dixon, In 1904 when she was twelve years old the family moved to Elgin, Illinois. She graduated from Sheridan School and Attended Elgin High School, she also attended the Chicago Training School which is a Methodist School in training young women to be Deaconesses to work in Churches or as Missionaries to serve at home or on the Foreign Fields.
She was very active in her Church, teaching in the Sunday School, singing in the choir and with the Epworth League which was a youth group which held there meetings each Sunday evening just : before the Evening Service.
She met her future husband Mr. Ralph M. Andrews at an Epworth League convention being held at the First Methodist Church in Elgin, Illinois, One evening when Mary was making supper with most of the folks sick in bed, Ralph presented her with an engagement ring. We were all so happy for them. At her next Sunday School class meeting which turned out to be a party in her honor, they announced her engagement to Mr. Andrews.
The happy couple were united in marriage on June 14 1918 at the home of the Brides Parents by the Rev. Fred D. Stone pastor of the First Methodist Church of Elgin, Illinois. The couple left on a short honeymoon and then returned to their apartment in Chicago, Illinois where her husband was employed.
Mary came back to Elgin when her husband was drafted into Uncle Sams Army, and was sent overseas for eighteen months and when the war was over he hurried home to his sweetheart and they continued to live in Elgin for a short time before moving to Aurora,IL.
There were four children born to this union - Kathryn Marie was born May 13, 1920 and she died August 19, 1922 - Shirley Mae was born December 18, 1924- Robert Eugene was born December 17, 1926 and Carolyn Ellen was born April 7 1929.
After Ralph's retirement they moved to Orlando, Florida to make their home near their son Robert. Mary and Ralph had forty-six happy years together with their family and loved ones before Ralph was called home on January 28, 1965. They were blessed with eighteen Grandchildren and seventeen Great Grandchildren,
Mary was Office Secretary at the Salvation Army in Aurora, Illinois for several years, and taught in the Sunday School, also held meetings once a week out in the country for children who had no way to get to Sunday School or Church. When she lived on Farnsworth Avenue, she started a Sunday School in their home for the neighborhood children and held meetings every Sunday until her place was getting to small for the many young people and older folks who wanted to come.
