Cyrus S Andrews was born December 30, 1844 in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Richardson and Sarah Harriott Andrews, both born in Pennsylvania. He came to this part of the country by covered wagon, pulled by a team of oxen.
Cyrus was a Civil War veteran, having enlisted in Co. H. 145th Infantry in 1863. He was taken prisoner at Chancellorsville, Pennsylvania in Libby Prison.
On November 11, 1866 he married Martha Belinda Vandeventer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Louis Vandeventer of Medina County, Ohio. In 1867 they moved to Liberty Township in Marshall County, Iowa.
They had four children: Thomas, Mary, Lavina and a son who died in April of 1873 at 4 days of age.
