Cyrus enlisted in Company H 145th Pennsylvania Volunteers on August 11, 1862 at Camp Chase, Erie, Pennsylvania. He was mustered in at Harper's Ferry under General McClellan. His regiment was at Antietam at the close of the battle.
Shortly after the Civil War he went to Wisconsin. While there he met Martha Belinda VanDeventer and later married on November 19, 1866.
April 23, 1867 Martha and Cyrus moved to Liberty Township, Marshall County, Iowa. There he began farming 1,000 acres. They attended the Bevins Grove Church. They had four children: Thomas Charles, Mary, Lovina and Willard.
