Suddenly Stricken.
Miss Bettie Andrews died in the Methodist Church, LaFayette, a few minutes after seven o'clock, on Sunday evening last. She had gone to church, apparently in her accustomed health; and just as the service began, while the voluntary was being sung, and before the end of the first line had been reached, she was stricken, and expired almost instantly.
As speedily as possible physicians were summoned; but before medical aid could be given the end had come. Heart failure is assigned as the cause of the startling suddenness of the demise.
Thus is strikingly illustrated the solemn saying, "in the midst of life we are in death."
Miss Bettie was born in Fredonia, Ala., about fifty-five years ago, being the daughter of Dr. I. W. Andrews, who was a man of prominence and usefulness. She grew to womanhood in the place of her birth, removing with the family to LaFayette some twenty-five or more years ago, and here she has spent her maturity, here she has done her part of life's labors, here reached release.
She joined the Methodist church during her girlhood, and continued in that communion, a faithful and useful member to the end. She was particularly active in Sunday school work, with the lady's church societies, and with the children's organizations. In all these departments, she was active and useful. A prominent citizen, who has known the deceased intimately for years, expressed the judgment of the community when he says, "she was a force for good in this community."
The funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. M. Glenn, at the church Monday afternoon at 3:30, the text of the brief discourse being "this woman was full of good works and alms deeds which she did." A large congregation was present. The choir rendered appropriate selections.
The deceased is survived by five brothers and a sister: Messrs. John and Walter Andrews, of LaFayette, Mr. William Andrews, of Opelika, Mr. Ernest Andrews, of Camp Hill, one brother in Virginia, the sister in Texas. Interment was in the city cemetery. A good woman has gone and her works do follow her.
