Charles Jebez "C.J." Andrews (1929 - 2011)
Charles Jebez "C.J." Andrews passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011. Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Arlington, 313 N. Center St., Arlington. Burial: will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Visitation: He will lie in state 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home.
He was born Sept. 6, 1929, in Southmayd to Ludie and Luther Andrews. He was the eldest of two children. His heritage was farming but he quickly found success in sports and earned a full basketball scholarship to Austin College in Sherman where he remained an active alumnus. During his college career, he found his passion for education. His first teaching position was as a coach at Frisco High School in the early 1950s, and up to his death he marveled at the growth of Frisco. Soon he moved to the Arlington ISD where he remained a beloved elementary principal for decades and retired from Wimbish Elementary. While teaching full time, he continued his journey of lifelong learning by receiving a Ph.D. in elementary education from the University of North Texas. He remained devoted to his first love, Honorable Patricia Andrews, who shared his love of learning and travel. Andrews had a passion for golf, gardening, hand-carved birds and community leadership. He was past president of the Arlington Lions Club. As a lifetime member of the Lions Club, he took pride in his perfect attendance and the organization's work for organ and eye donor advocacy and providing glasses for children in need. Unknown to many, he was president of the Iris Society and attempted to hybrid his own species of iris. Although he towered over most at 6 feet, 7 inches, his kind heart, sense of humor and sincere love of people created an instant connection with his friends, students, staff and community. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Arlington, Fort Worth Club, and Greater Arlington Lions Club.
Survivors: His wife, Honorable Patricia Andrews of Arlington; son, Rex Crosswhite and wife, Mary; granddaughter, Alicia Crosswhite; grandson, Sean Sweeney and wife, Justine; great-granddaughter, Emma Sweeney; sister, Lou Lilly of Benbrook; nieces, Natalie Durant and Donna Pannell.
