Carol Susan Andrew of Ridgecrest, CA passed away at Ridgecrest, CA Regional Hospital on 6 Apr 2008 after a brief illness.
Carol was born in Manila, Philippine Islands on 30 Jun 1938 to Thomas and Lolita Chapman. In 1941, the Chapman's were interred in the Santo Thomas Concentration Camp after the Japanese invaded the Philippines. Carol spent 4 years of her young adolescent life (age 3-6) in the camp with her parents, suffering many hardships that are characteristic of WWII concentration camps. Thanks to General Douglas MacArthur, the Chapmans were liberated and came to the USA via Troop Ship in 1945. On that ship Carol actually got to sit on MacArthur's lap!
After a brief stay in Pasadena, CA, Carol's father got a job with the Naval Ordnance Test Station (NOTS), China Lake, CA and the family moved to 304-A Fowler Street at China Lake, CA in 1945. Carol grew up on base and attended Burroughs High School graduating in 1956. She was married the same year to Larry K. Stitt who was stationed at China Lake. The Stitt's had three children, Larry, Jr.; Craig and Lolita.
Being married to a Navy man, Carol moved around to other parts of the US in the next decade including Jacksonville, FL, Yuma, AZ, Memphis, TN and Lemoore, CA.
Carol divorced while in Lemoore and met and married John W. "Jack" Andrew. The Andrews' had two children, Kathy and Diahann. Jack eventually got stationed at China Lake as a Navy Chief, and Carol was back in the Indian Wells Valley again. Once the children were older, Carol got a job with Household Finance in Ridgecrest and in the early 1980's following in the footsteps of her father she got a job with the China Lake Naval Weapons Center and retired from Goverment Service in 2002.
Carol is survived by daughters, Lolita Morris of Mammoth Lakes, CA; Kathy Andrew of Vacaville, CA; Diahann Andrew of Ridgecrest, CA; son-in-law John Morris of Mammoth Lakes, CA; brother Tom Chapman of Big Pine, CA; sister Margarita "Margie" Chapman of Inyokern, CA; mother Lolita Chapman of Inyokern, CA and granddaughters Haylee Chapman and Cassidy Morris.
She was proceeded in death by her father, Thomas Chapman; husband Jack Andrew and Larry K. Stitt; and sons Larry, Jr and Craig Stitt.
