He enlisted in the Army on April 25, 1942 in Erie, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Filling Station Attendant and also as Single, without dependents.
Earl was "Killed In Action" while a passenger on the S.S. Thomas Nelson which was hit by a Japanese kamikaze attack during the war.
He was one of 136 soldiers that were killed during that attack on the Nelson.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Mrs. Dina Swanson of 186 High street received a telegram from the War Department, Saturday informing her that her son, Pfc. Earl J. Anderson, 32, was killed in action on Leyte on Nov. 12. The wire stated that a letter will follow.
Pfc. Anderson entered the service April 25, 1942, and received training at Keesler Field, Miss., and Santa Monica, Calif. He was stationed at the Army Air Base at Columbia, S.C. before going overseas in April, 1943.
He has been stationed in Australia and New Guinea, where he was placed in the Operations office, and in October of this year arrived in the Philippine Islands.
Born in Bradford on April 4, 1912, Pfc. Anderson had lived here his entire life. He was a graduate of Bradford High school, class of 1930, and before going into the Army, was associated with his brother at the Seven Dials Service Station.
Surviving him, besides his mother, are one sister, Elsie, this city; and three brothers, Wilbur, this city, and Carl and Wallace, both of Detroit, Mich.
