Obituary - Bountiful - Our beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, Darwin Clair Anderson passed away peacefully at age 62 in the presence of his loving daughters and wife on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at LDS Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Descended from Mormon pioneers, Darwin was born in Salt Lake City on July 23, 1943, to Joseph Clair and Fredra "Inez" (Oldham) Anderson. Darwin was the oldest of seven children. He grew up in Bountiful where he and his brother Glen worked together to earn their Eagle Scout awards. He graduated from Bountiful High School in the Class of 1961.
Darwin earned his B.S. in Radio and TV Production (Speech) from the University of Utah in 1965. At the U, he completed the Army ROTC Program but accepted a commission as an Air Force officer. He served in Vietnam as a combat documentation team leader from 1967-68.
Darwin met the love of his life, Kathleen Elaine McMillin, in 1972 during an assignment to Scott AFB, Illinois. They were married in Edwardsville, Illinois, on Nov. 17, 1973, in the chapel at Southern Illinois University. They were sealed to each other and their children in the Washington, D.C. Temple on June 11, 1994.
A career officer, Darwin retired from the U.S. Air Force February 1, 1993. He had served the previous 5-1/2 years as Assistant Director of Defense Audiovisual Policy, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. He commanded the 1365th Audiovisual Squadron at Vandenberg AFB, California, from 1983-1985. Both of his beautiful daughters were born during that tour.
During his military career, Darwin attended the Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College and earned a master's degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Redlands, California. He was a Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, in 1988.
Darwin was a Business Process Management Consultant for a few years. He enjoyed his time as a docent at the new Salt Lake City Library because it reflected his love of learning and architecture. He took great pride in his service as Chairman of the Bountiful Historical Commission.
Darwin is survived by his wife Kathleen and their daughters, Lauren Camille and Amber Claire, as well as his sisters Margo (Hal) Busund, Bucks County, Penn., and Charlotte (Dave) Dahlberg, Louise Anderson, and Marilyn (Charles) Cooley, Bountiful. He is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews, one great-nephew, aunts, uncles and other extended family from his and Kathleen's families. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Olena (Miller) Anderson and William and Emma Charlotte (Pfost) Oldham, his loving parents, in-laws and his two younger brothers, Glen and Richard.
An active member of the Woodland Hills Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he especially enjoyed the Tabernacle Choir because he had worked as a broadcast cameraman during college.
The family would like to especially thank Dr. Hal Cole for his care this past year and also the medical staff of the Shock-Trauma ICU and the Liver Transplant Team of LDS Hospital for their compassionate care these last five weeks. Our dream of a transplant was not realized but we are grateful for every day we have shared with Darwin.
